function block diagram An IEC 61131 language that describes a function between input variables and output variables. Input and output variables are connected to blocks by connection lines. See 'limited variability language'. functional safety The ability of a system to carry out the actions necessary to achieve or to maintain a safe state for the process and its associated equipment. G group A collection of two or three input modules (or two output modules), arranged together to provide enhanced availability for their respective input or output channels. H hand-held equipment Equipment which is intended to be held in one hand while being operated with the other hand.
